It is one of the best ventures you will enjoy during your Uganda safari.

The IUCN lists Pangolins as threatened species and they are on the Red List of extinction. These small animals are solitary and mostly active during nighttime. They are uniquely covered in tough and overlapping scales with a long tail and tongue.

The Uganda Conservation Foundation lists 4 species of the Pangolin that you can see in Uganda, that is the long-tailed black-bellied pangolin, tree or white-bellied pangolins, cape or Temmink’s ground pangolin, and the giant pangolin.

The Pangolin is a special animal as it is one of the most iconic totems of the Baganda people from the Buganda Kingdom known as Olugave.

During the Uganda safari, you can encounter the different Pangolin species around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for a better safari experience. The Pangolin Rescue Center in the outskirts of Buhoma offers the best experiences of meeting these creatures and you get to know more of the work done to conserve the species.

It was founded in 2015 to rescue, rehabilitate, and release Pangolins in Uganda. Over the years, the Center has been able to rescue over 150 Pangolins and it has put them back in their natural habitat.

The experience of encountering Pangolins is roughly 90 minutes and you get to enjoy up-close views of the endangered creatures. This is the best time to take memorable photos and get to know more about their care.

If you want to encounter the Pangolin experience, it is advised to book accommodation in the Buhoma sector the northern sector of Bwindi National Park.

The Pangolin Conservation Project

All the 8 Pangolin species are currently threatened with extinction. Most of the African Pangolins are targeted for intercontinental markets, especially in Asia. This is because the Pangolin Meat is consumed as a delicacy and for social status, and their scales are used as traditional medicine.

Illegal trafficking is the main threat to the Pangolins in Uganda as it threatens their population.

The Pangolin Conservation Project, funded by Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, Uganda Wildlife Authority, and other conservation partners works together with the right equipment to rescue confiscated Pangolins.

They have done better work as there is improvement in protecting the 4 Pangolin species of Uganda. Together, they have educated the Bwindi National Park surrounding communities about the advantages of protecting Pangolins, especially the Batwa.

If you are on a Gorilla safari, you can look out for the endangered species, if lucky, you can see the species and you should make the Batwa community experience part of the Uganda safari so that you empower the Batwa about the purposes of conservation.

Reach out to us for a better experience of Pangolin encounters on Uganda safaris.

The post Pangolin Encounters in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

BWINDI MOUNTAIN BIKING TOURS, MOUNTAIN BIKING SAFARIS IN BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

Samuel Makanga

Safari activities

Are you a mountain biking enthusiast and looking forward to an interesting...

The post BWINDI MOUNTAIN BIKING TOURS, MOUNTAIN BIKING SAFARIS IN BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

Are you a mountain biking enthusiast and looking forward to an interesting adventure in Uganda? Visitors can explore the impenetrable forest via the following six trails;

There are fantastic hiking trails in different sectors of Bwindi where you will have an opportunity to see primates, species of birds, butterflies, trees and other organisms. This usually starts at 9:00 am after breakfast and 2:15 pm after lunch.

a) Nature Walks From Buhoma Sector Of Bwindi

Several guided nature walks, ranging from 30 minutes to 8 hours in duration, lead from Buhoma, offering the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and broader biodiversity of the forest, and to see a variety of monkeys and birds.

For monkeys and general scenery, the best of the guided walks is probably the 3-hour Waterfall Trail, which leads for 2 kilometers along the disused logging road to Nkuringo before ascending through a beautiful area of forest to a 33 meter-high waterfall on the Munyaga River.

The Mazubijiro Loop Trail and Rushura Hill Trail, each of which takes about 3 hours, offers good views across to the Virunga Mountains.

The 8-hour Ivi River Walk, which leads to the Ivi River on the southern boundary of the park, offers good opportunity for seeing monkeys, duikers, and a variety of birds.

Guided nature walks in cost US$30 (Foreign nonresidents-FNR) and US$15 (Foreign residents-FR), exclusive of park entrance fee of US$40 (FNR) and US$30 (FR), which is waived on walks undertaken on the same day as gorilla trekking.

b) Nature Walks In Ruhija Sector Of Bwindi

It is permitted to walk unguided along the public road through Ruhija sector, which offers good wildlife viewing, with black-and-white colobus and L’Hoest’s monkeys being particularly common.

Guided nature walks out of Ruhija cost US$30 (Foreign nonresidents) and US$15 (Foreign residents). Unlike Buhoma, it is not really feasible to do any of these hikes on the same day as you track gorillas, so you will need to pay the US$40/30 entrance fee.

For peak-baggers, the 6-hour Bamboo Trail leads to the 2607 meters Rwamunyonyi Peak, which is the highest point in the park, and notable for good birding.

The Mubwindi Swamp Trail offers superb birdwatching. This trail descends several hundred meters from the trailhead to a swamp area that harbours 20 bird species listed in IUCN Red Data Book and/or endemic to the Albertine Rift.

The first part of the trail passes through highlands where there are several clearings offering good views into the canopy, and a variety of birds.

There are great views across Mount Muhabura and other volcanoes in Virunga Range. The trail descends into an area of thick-leafed scrubby marsh rated the most reliable site anywhere for the extremely localized African green broadbill (often sighted from May to July).

Eventually, you emerge on the edge of Mubwindi Swamp, where the main avian draws are the quite easily seen Grauer’s rush warbler and Carruthers’s cisticola and the vocal but visually elusive red-chested flufftail.

For non-birds, other wildlife includes black-and-white colobus, red-tailed and L’Hoest’s monkeys. There is also a chance of seeing elephants and sitatunga in the vicinity of the swamp. An early start is recommended, and carries plenty of water.

Technically, it is a 3-hour walk, but that would be quite a frog-match-4 hours is more relaxed.

c) Nature Walks In Rushaga Sector Of Bwindi

Nature walks are offered at the same fees as elsewhere Bwindi. Birdlife is broadly similar to Buhoma, and L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, and red-tailed monkeys are often seen, along with black-and-white colobus, while chimpanzees have a large vocal presence but are seldom seen.

The 3-4-hour Waterfall Trail descends into deep valley dripping with giant tree ferns, then climbs upward through a narrow, stream-filled fissure in the cliff face to reach a towering rock-walled atrium containing a cascade of more than 30 meters.

Outside the park, a candidate for further exploration would seem to be the dramatic and deeply incised Ruhezanyenda River Valley.

d) Hiking In Nkuringo Sector Of Bwindi

Nature walks into the national park can be arranged at the UWA rates, but the steep nature of the descent and ascent makes it a less –appealing prospects than at the other trailheads.

Though Nkuringo is superbly scenic area with great potential for hiking outside the forest, the possibilities for haphazard exploration are pretty limited. The steep nature of Nteko Ridge means that the main alternatives for a pleasant stroll are either west along the ridge top road towards DRC or east towards Rubuguri.

The post Hiking/Nature Walks In Bwindi appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

LAKE MUTANDA VISITS

Samuel Makanga

Safari activities

Imagine stepping into a world where calm waters mirror towering volcanoes, and...

The post LAKE MUTANDA VISITS appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

Imagine stepping into a world where calm waters mirror towering volcanoes, and every paddle or hike reveals layers of Uganda’s untouched beauty-this is what Lake Mutanda visits offer.

A visit to Lake Mutanda in southwestern Uganda blends serene relaxation with exciting adventures, perfect for nature enthusiasts and culture seekers alike.

Additionally, this hidden gem offers canoeing on crystal-clear waters, birdwatching amid over 200 species, and easy access to gorilla trekking nearby.

Below is a detailed breakdown of what the Lake Mutanda visits entail!

About Lake Mutanda

Nestled in the heart of Kisoro District in southwestern Uganda, Lake Mutanda is a breathtaking freshwater body that captures the essence of Africa’s natural wonders.

Spanning about 29 square kilometers with a maximum depth of 56 meters, this lake sits at an altitude of 1,800 meters in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain ranges.

Surrounded by three volcanoes—Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo, and Mount Gahinga—it’s partly located near the Rwanda and DR Congo borders, making it a unique crossroad of ecosystems.

Geographically, Lake Mutanda was formed by volcanic activity, damming ancient river valleys, creating a scenic lakes paradise often called part of the “Switzerland of Africa.”

Drained by the Rutshuru River flowing north to Lake Edward, its waters are filtered through lush vegetation, ensuring clarity and safety—no hippos or crocodiles here, unlike other spots.

History ties it to local communities like the Bafumbira people, with islands serving as homes, farms, and even somber sites from past traditions.

Around Lake Mutanda, terraced hills rise to 2,500 meters, dotted with forests and wetlands that support diverse life.

This overview highlights why Uganda’s Lake Mutanda is a must-see, blending geology, location, and cultural depth into one magical spot.

Visiting Lake Mutanda Experience

Embarking on a visit to Lake Mutanda feels like entering a peaceful haven where time slows down. Gorilla Habituation in Bwindi National Park should be on your bucket list!

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique and immersive experience that allows visitors to participate in the habituating process of gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Uganda.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Uganda, is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. The park is home to over 400 endangered mountain gorillas, as well as 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, and 1,000 flowering plant species.

Its dense, misty forest features steep hills, valleys, and waterfalls, making it an ideal destination for gorilla watching, habituation experiences, and nature walks.

This Habituation experience which was initiated or founded by the late American primatologist Dian Fossey enables visitors to spend up to 4 hours with fully habituated gorillas, accompanied by expert researchers and guides.

Habituation is the process of making these gentle giants comfortable with humans, allowing for tourism and research. This 2–5-year process involves gradually introducing gorillas to human presence, with researchers, guides, and trackers working together to achieve this goal.

The experience is done in Bwindi National Park, Uganda, specifically in the Rushaga sector and the only place which is in the southern part of the Bwindi Forest National Park.

It costs $1,500 per person, inclusive of park entry fees, and is limited to 4 visitors daily. This allows for a more intimate and immersive experience, with visitors able to spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas, compared to 1 hour for standard gorilla watching.

The Habituation experience supports conservation activities and efforts and protects gorilla habitats, while also generating revenue for local communities and the government.

Additionally, it allows for research and monitoring of individual gorilla behavior and health. The experience is available year round, but the optimal time is during the dry season (June to August and December to February).

Let’s delve into the other such details of this experience!

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park -Where Is Gorilla Habituation Experience Done in Uganda?

Bwindi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a protected area located in southwestern Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As one of Africa’s premier wildlife safari destinations, the park spans 327 square kilometers, with over 80% covered in dense tropical rainforests, featuring trees up to 40 meters high.

This unique habitat is home to over 400 endangered gorillas, approximately half of the world’s population.

The park’s diverse landscape, with elevations ranging from 3,904 to 8,553 ft, also supports a wide variety of wildlife, including chimpanzees, monkeys, antelopes, 350 bird species, 1,000 flowering plants, and 160 tree species.

The Gorillas are divided into several completely habituated groups that are open to tourism.

The park has over 13 habituated groups, including Rushegura, Habinyanja, Oruzogo, and Mubare, among others.

These groups are organized into four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga.

Uganda boasts of having a semi habituated gorilla family (two gorilla families) in East and Central Africa and others fully habituated, making Bwindi National Park a premier travel destination.

With its favorable tropical climate, Bwindi offers ideal conditions for gorilla watching, habituation experiences, and nature walks, making it a prime travel destination for tourists.

Its proximity to other national parks, such as Queen Elizabeth and Kibale Forest, makes it an attractive addition to any Uganda safari package.

Other Tourist Places It Is Done

Habituation experiences are also offered in other national parks in Africa like Volcanoes National Park Rwanda, Virunga National Park in the DR Congo, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda, which are home to approximately 600+, 200+, and 80+ gorillas, respectively.

The Uganda Gorilla Habituation Process – when choosing accommodations. It’s essential to book in advance, especially during peak season.

Licensed tour operators, park headquarters, or tour companies can help you find the best lodging option for your needs and budget.

Best Time to Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for Habituation Experiences

Bwindi National Park is open for habituation experiences year-round, with consistent temperatures ranging from 20-25°C. However, the optimal time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February.

During these periods, the weather conditions are favorable, with less rainfall and more manageable terrain, making it easier to trek through the forest.

The forest trails are less slippery, and the vegetation is thinner, making it easier to spot the gorillas.

Additionally, the dry weather reduces the risk of gorilla habituation being interrupted by heavy rainfall.

However, if you’re looking for a more personalized experience and lower costs, consider visiting during the rainy season, from March to May and September to November.

Although the terrain can be more challenging, the gorillas tend to stay closer to the park’s boundaries, making treks shorter. Carrying waterproof jackets and wearing good ankle support boots is encouraged.

It’s worth noting that the wet season can offer advantages for photographers, as the rain clears the air of dust, making taking photographs easy, and the rain and mist combine to create a moody, wilderness atmosphere.

Regardless of the time of year you plan to visit, it’s essential to book your habituation permit and accommodation well in advance, as they often sell out quickly.

What To Wear for Bwindi Gorilla Habituation Experiences?

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, it’s essential to pack the right clothing and accessories. African gorilla parks offering ops for tracking gorillas include Mgahinga National Park in Uganda (Nyakagezi gorilla troop), Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda (10+ gorilla groups), and Virunga National Park in Congo (10+ gorilla troops).

The Time Spent Tracking Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can take 30 minutes to 7 hours, depending on the gorilla family’s location, group size, and terrain.

The average hike spans 1–3 km (0.6–1.9 miles), with a one-hour observation period once the mountain gorillas are found.

The gorilla habituation experience in Rushaga extends this to four hours with the gorillas, totaling 4–6 hours for the entire adventure.

Meeting and Observing Mountain Gorillas

Encountering Bwindi’s mountain gorillas is a humbling experience.

After locating a gorilla family, you’ll spend one hour watching silverbacks lead, juveniles play, and mothers nurture their young.

Park rangers ensure a 7–10-meter distance to minimize stress on the wild mountain gorillas.

Their calm demeanor and curious gazes create an unforgettable, almost spiritual connection, often described as awe-inspiring.

How Hard Is Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is physically demanding, with steep, slippery trails and altitudes ranging from 1,400 to 3,000 meters.

Hikes can last 2–7 hours, with Nkuringo being the most challenging due to its steep climbs.

Recent rain, especially during the rainy season (March–May, October–November), can make trails muddy, making it hard to find mountain gorillas, so you need to be cautious.

A reasonable fitness level is recommended to fully experience gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, but porters can assist, supporting both trekkers and local communities.

How to Prepare for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Forest National Park?

To ensure a successful gorilla trekking in Uganda experience, follow these tips:

Physical Fitness: Train with hiking or cardio to navigate long, uneven trails.

Health: Avoid trekking if sick with a cold or any transmissible illness to protect the mountain gorillas from diseases.

Booking: Secure Uganda gorilla permits ($800) three months in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a trusted tour company.

Gear: Pack sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved clothing, rain gear, garden gloves, and a daypack with snacks and water.

Porters: Hire a porter to carry gear and bags, which is major support to the local economy.

Briefing: Arrive early at park headquarters for the 7:30 AM briefing on rules and gorilla trekking etiquette.

Pack only pliable items for the trek to minimize littering and disturbances in the park!

Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs in Uganda | How Much Do Gorilla Permits Cost in Uganda?

It is worth understanding that before embarking on a Bwindi gorilla trek, trekkers need to have an authorized gorilla permit from UWA, permitting them to track gorillas.

A gorilla trekking permit in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park costs $800 for foreign non-residents and 300,000 UGX for East African citizens (as of July 1, 2024).

This gorilla permit includes park entry, advanced trackers, ranger fees, and one hour with the mountain gorillas in their gorilla habitats.

Gorilla Permits exclude accommodation, transport, porter fees, and meals.

With only 152 permits available daily (114 during COVID-19 restrictions), book three months in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a reputable tour operator due to high demand.

In Uganda, where up to 8 trekkers per group visit one of 19 permitted gorilla groups/families in Bwindi (144) and Mgahinga (8) daily on a first-come, first-served basis, tour operators secure up to 80% of permits in advance; Rwanda issues 96 permits each day, while the DRC offers access to its 6 habituated families under similar allocation principles.

For comparison, Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park charges $1,500 per person for a Rwanda gorilla permit, while the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park gorilla permit starts at $400 in the peak season and can go lower in the low or rainy season.

This means that Gorilla trekking permits in Uganda are less expensive than those in Rwanda, while permits in DRC are the cheapest compared to both Uganda and Rwanda.

Other Attractions Seen During Gorilla Trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Beyond mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers stunning sights to travelers on Uganda gorilla treks: hidden waterfalls, lush rainforests, the Batwa People, and <a
