href="https://www.bwindiforestnationalparkuganda.com/">Bwindi Impenetrable National Park—home of the mountain gorillas—has been ranked the 3rd Best Adventure Destination in the World at the prestigious TOURISE Global Tourism Awards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, held on 10th November 2025.

This award adds to other accolades won by Bwindi over the years, such as Africa’s finest birdwatching location (2012), one of the planet’s most beautiful places and best hiking destinations according to CNN (2019), and the country’s leading wildlife destination (2017 Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo).

However, this 2025 achievement has ignited international excitement among thrill-seekers, nature lovers, wildlife photographers, filmmakers, and outdoor enthusiasts interested in Uganda safari tours.

Bwindi is no longer just a national treasure—it is now officially one of the world’s most exhilarating adventure destinations worth exploring for unforgettable African safaris and Uganda gorilla tours.

Let us break down what this win means for Bwindi and the nation at large!

Uganda’s Bwindi National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park occupies 321 km² of misty, ancient jungle in southwest Uganda, right along the DR Congo frontier and the Albertine Rift.

This 25,000-year-old forest, traversable only on foot and honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, is one of the continent’s richest biodiversity hotspots.

It protects roughly half the world’s surviving mountain gorillas (400–460 individuals), alongside chimpanzees, forest elephants, rare birds, monkeys, and hundreds of plant species worth seeing during safaris in Uganda, Africa.

Uganda Gorilla trekking is the highlight of a safari to Uganda, complemented by nature walks, excellent birding, and warm cultural visits with the Batwa and Bakiga locals.

Mountain Gorillas: The Star Attractions of Bwindi National Park

Bwindi is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas – the largest single population on Earth that can be seen during gorilla trekking tours in Uganda.

These critically endangered great apes live only in Bwindi and the Virunga volcanoes, making the park their most vital sanctuary.

Their steady population growth stands as one of the planet’s greatest conservation triumphs.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking: A Life-Changing Adventure in Bwindi National Park

Regarded as the most intense and emotional <a during Uganda gorilla tours/Gorilla trekking safaris in universally describe the experience as raw, spiritual, and unforgettable.

Contribution of the Uganda Gorillas to Bwindi’s Recognition as a Global Conservation however, this is not guaranteed, but it can be sustained if more effective conservation actions are implemented.

The newborn, together with its mother, are reported by the park rangers who closely monitor them to be in excellent condition, and the silverback continues to do his job of closely guarding the mother and her baby from any would-be threat.

An Overview of The Bitukura Gorilla Group

The Bitukura is one of the four gorilla groups in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The Bitukura gorilla group gets its name from River Bitukura, which passes through the forest, and it was from this river that the family was first sighted.

The habituation process of this gorilla group is considered one of the shortest since it started in July 2007 and ended in October 2008 (15 months), which is considered less time compared to the 2 years recommended for habituation.

The Bitukura gorilla family is one of the peaceful groups, and it shares a bond with the Kyaguriro gorilla family; the two families are known to meet in a get-together at least once each month due to their social bond.

Mugisha, a silverback, leads this gorilla group, succeeding Ndahura, who died in 2016 after falling from a tree.

Members Of the Bitukura Gorilla Family

These are some of the members that make up the Bitukura family.

Mugisha is the dominant silverback, Karamuzi the 2nd silverback, Rukumu the 3rd silverback, Rukara the 4th silverback, adult females (Betina, Ruhara, and Kamuga), blackbacks (Obia and Mugisha), and infants (Twakire, Kabandize, Kadogo, and Mubwindi)

These gorillas continue to live peacefully in their family together with the Kyaguriro members that they occasionally associate with.

Gorilla Sectors in Bwindi National Park and The Different Gorilla Families That Belong to These Sectors

The following are some of the different gorilla sectors in Bwindi National Park and the different families under them.

Ruhija Sector

There are 4 families here, including Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguriro, and Mukiza.

Rushaga Trekking Sector

There are about 10 gorilla families, including the Mishaya, Busingye, Nshongi, Tindatine, Bweza, Muchunguzi, Rwigi, Bikingi, Kutu, and Kahungye gorilla group.

Nkuringo Trekking Sector

Nkuringo has 4 gorilla families, including the Bushaho, Posho, Christmas, and Nkuringo gorilla groups.

Buhoma Sector

There are 7 gorilla families in the Buhoma sector, which include the Muyambi, Binyindo, Rushegura, Katwe, Habinyanja, Kanywanyi, and Mubare groups.

Overview of Gorilla Population in Bwindi National Park

The population of mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has increased from about 300 counted in the 1997 gorilla census to about 459 according to the 2018 census.

The birth of a new baby gorilla in the Bitukura gorilla family, together with the recent births in other families in Bwindi NP, is expected to increase the total number of mountain gorillas in the park, making it a popular destination for gorilla trekking tours in Uganda.

Though the 2023 census for mountain gorillas was affected by COVID-19, a new census was launched in May 2025 by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP).

The delayed census due to COVID is somehow seen as a blessing in disguise since the recent births are expected to positively affect the figures of the census results to be released in 2026.

A Breakdown of New Baby Gorillas Born in Different Gorilla Families in Bwindi National Park Over Recent Years

In May 2025 – Two baby gorillas, one born in the Busingye family and the other in Nkuringo

2024 – About 24 newborns were recorded; of these, one was recorded in the Mucunguzi family (born to Migogo), one in the Kahungye family (born to Mukidebe), and one in the Nshongi family (born to Munini), and others in different families.

2023—About 15 newborns were recorded, and among these births, one occurred in the Mukiza family and others in other families.

2022—About 12 newborns were recorded; among these, some were born into the Christmas family (to Nyabwoba) and the Kutu group (to Murema), and others births happened in other families.

2021– About 17 newborns were recorded; some were born in the Nkuringo family (born to Nderema) and in other families like Muyambi, Nshongi, Mubare, Oruzogo, Busigye, Mukiza, etc.

2020—About 21 newborns were recorded; some were recorded in families like Muyambi, Nshongi, Rushegura, and Kutu gorillas, among others.

2019—About 19 newborns were recorded; some were recorded in families like Muyambi, Nshongi, Nkuringo, Busigye, Rushegura, and Mucunguzi, among other families.

The Prospects of The Gorilla Population in Bwindi National Park

There has been a steady increase in the gorilla population in Bwindi National Park, according to the 2018 census, where 459 individuals were recorded from 300 in 1997. With this trend, and according to the recent births, the population of gorillas is likely to further increase.

This increase in the population of mountain gorillas is facilitated by the well-managed tourism and protection by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and stakeholders.

Continued implementation of conservation measures, combined with a collaborative community model, is expected to lead to positive cohabitation and a subsequent increase in the gorilla population, which will further lead to an increase in gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda.

Mountain Gorilla Conservation Efforts in Bwindi National Park

No matter how the birth records may improve in gorilla families like Bitukura, there is still a need to conserve these critically endangered species, given the many threats they face, including climate change, poaching, and diseases.

The following measures are being taken to conserve the mountain gorillas in their natural environment.

Anti-poaching and monitoring measures are being implemented through anti-poaching patrols by the park rangers.

Community involvement, which is done through conservation programs that provide alternative livelihoods, to prevent many locals from engaging in activities like poaching.

Strict rules are enforced during activities like gorilla trekking, such as maintaining the minimum distance. This prevents the animals from contracting diseases from humans.

When these measures are continually implemented, new births are expected to be recorded, which keeps Uganda at the center of gorilla safaris in Africa.

Embark on a Uganda gorilla safari and witness the adorable newborn gorilla, caring mother, and other majestic mountain gorillas in their picturesque habitat. Kwitonga’s new addition brings happiness to the Nkuringo family, while Bizulu’s little one joins the Busingye family.

The mountain gorilla population now stands at 16 in the Nkuringo family and 15 in the Busingye family in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

The two mothers and their babies are reported to be happy and healthy, thanks to the diligent care provided by the park rangers and the veterinary team, according to the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

How Mountain Gorillas are Distributed in Uganda

It is important to note that Uganda is home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, with 459 individuals living in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and about 30 gorillas living in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

These mountain gorillas are organized in gorilla groups or gorilla families that you can encounter on your Uganda gorilla trekking safari.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has over 25 habituated gorilla families divided across four gorilla trekking sectors, while Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one habituated transboundary gorilla group.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors and Their Groups

Uganda’s Bwindi has four gorilla trekking sectors, these include Nkuringo sector, Buhoma Sector, Ruhija sector, and Rushaga Sector.

Nkuringo Sector (south Bwindi)

This sector has four gorilla groups, which include Nkuringo, Christmas, Bushao, and Posho.

Buhoma Sector (North Bwindi)

The Buhoma sector has 7 gorilla groups, which include Habinyanja, Mubare, Rushegura, Muyambi, Katwe, Binyindo, and Kanyanyi.

Ruhija Sector (East Bwindi)

This sector has four gorilla groups. Of that population, 459 gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and 30 in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This makes Uganda the premier destination for gorilla trekking tours.

The continued increase in the number of mountain gorillas in Uganda is due to a boom in new births, given the ongoing conservation efforts. As a result, gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda are among the most preferred tourist activities during a Uganda safari. The birth of new baby gorillas in Bwindi is highly valued towards conservation.

On a Uganda safari, you can only see these numerous gentle giants when you undertake a Uganda gorilla trekking tour either in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Next to Uganda, Rwanda has several mountain gorillas. On a Rwanda safari, you can observe nearly 380 endangered mountain gorillas. You can only view these gorillas on a Rwanda gorilla trekking safari in Volcanoes National Park.

Congo, too, is home to a significant number of mountain gorillas, about 350 individuals. While on your Congo safari, consider visiting Virunga National Park for the best Congo gorilla trekking safari experience.

Uganda Mountain Gorilla Census

Based on the 2018 mountain gorilla census, a total of 459 individuals were counted in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and 30 members in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Uganda’s gorilla population is almost half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, which is about 1063 mountain gorillas.

Another population census of mountain gorillas commenced on 7th May 2025, and this is designed to determine the total population of mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda. This census was launched at the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC) in Ruhija, a section of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The census was conducted by conservation stakeholders to assess the gorilla population and explore effective strategies for increasing the number of mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda, thereby enhancing the quality of Uganda wildlife safaris.

The recent births of mountain gorillas are expected to increase the mountain gorilla population, making Uganda the best destination for wildlife safaris, especially gorilla trekking safaris.

The Future of the Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

For a period of about three decades, primate species like mountain gorillas were close to extinction. This was due to human activities like settlement, agriculture, and poaching, among others. Today, the future and continued existence of mountain gorillas look bright. Conservation efforts greatly contribute to their survival.

To ensure the continued existence of the mountain gorillas and other primates. The Uganda Wildlife Authority and other agencies have taken the following measures:

Discouraged human activities like poaching and encroachment through routine park patrols

Put in place clear boundaries in the parks.

Health monitoring to ensure that mountain gorillas are in good condition

Encouraged community involvement

Collaborated with other units, like health units, and law enforcers, like the police, to conserve mountain gorillas.

With the above put into action, Uganda’s population and the existence of mountain gorillas are expected to thrive.

Mountain gorillas remain the leading tourist attraction in Uganda’s tourism sector, and any addition to the number of newly born baby gorillas in Bwindi implies more tourists will be attracted to book Uganda safaris.

As Uganda gorilla trekking tours increase incomes, money from these Uganda safaris can further be used to enforce gorilla conservation measures, hence the continued existence of the mountain gorillas.

Gorilla trekking safaris can also continue to generate income for community development, such as funding health centres, schools, and road construction, among other initiatives. These, in the long run, also boost Uganda’s tourism sector.

The recent births of two baby gorillas in Bwindi in the Nkuringo family and the Busingye family reflect Uganda’s joint efforts in conserving the environment and its rich biodiversity.

Special thanks to the Uganda Wildlife Authority and all other conservation stakeholders for their continued efforts to conserve the environment.

As you plan for gorilla trekking in Uganda while on a Uganda safari, consider visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to see the newborn mountain gorillas in the Nkuringo Sector and Rushaga Sector for an unforgettable gorilla trekking safari experience in Uganda.

The post THE BIRTH OF TWO BABY GORILLAS IN BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

Uganda Gorilla Families & Pros Of The Buhoma Region In Bwindi

Samuel Makanga

Travel blog

Uganda Gorilla Families & Pros Of The Buhoma Region In Bwindi Impenetrable...

The post Uganda Gorilla Families & Pros Of The Buhoma Region In Bwindi appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

Uganda Gorilla Families & Pros Of The Buhoma Region In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Situated in Southwestern Uganda in Kanungu district, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is one of the most important Uganda safari destinations that are flocked by thousands of tourists every year. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is characterized by a bio-diverse forested mountainous area that habits the unique endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi Impenetrable forest is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas totaling to about 459 out of 1004. The remaining numbers of mountain gorillas live in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda, Virunga National Park Congo and in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda. Being home to two mountain gorilla safari destinations makes Uganda the world’s biggest destination that offers Uganda gorilla safaris and Africa gorilla safaris at large.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was also ranked the best birding spot by Africa bird club, the leading organization that concerned itself with the conservation and study of Africa’s birds. Bwindi forest national park area is an Important Birding Area although it is famous for its thrilling Uganda gorilla safaris. The forest is placed in the diverse Kigezi area surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful scenery that gets tourists on Uganda safaris wowed.

The altitude variation of the forest ranging between 1,190-2,600m on both mountain and lowland areas that give a variety of habitat for different bird species. It is home to about 350-bird species including 23 out of the 24 Albertine rift endemics and 14 not recorded anywhere else in Uganda but in this forest.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers 331sqkm (128sqmi) making it the largest forest area in East Africa. Due to the fact that it is a huge forest, has been divided into four gorilla regions of Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. In this article, we are going to unleash for you the Buhoma region.

About The Buhoma Gorilla Trekking Safari Region

The Buhoma region is the most popular Uganda gorilla trekking safari region as it was the first place in Uganda where gorilla trekking started. Buhoma has only four gorilla families and the first group of tourists to trek gorillas in Uganda was in the Buhoma region of Bwindi National Park in 1993. This makes gorillas in Buhoma region the oldest habituated gorilla family in the whole of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and this family is called Mubare group.

Mubare gorilla family in Buhoma currently has 9 members, a factor highly attributed to the Late Ruhondeza who was the head of the family that died in 2013. Ruhondeza had grown older and could not effectively defend the family which resulted in break ways that later weakened the family. By the time of Ruhondezas’ death, the family had only 4 members but after his death, then new silverback embarked on an aggressive campaign that has seen the group captures some individuals from other families to the tune of nine members. It is believed that with the ambition of the new silverback, the family is likely to grow on numbers.

Habinyanja Gorilla Family was habituated in 1997 and the first group of tourists tracked this gorilla family in 1999. The gorilla habituation process takes a period of 2 years. Habinyanja Group derives its name from a Rukiga word “Nyanja” which means “ a place with water”. The reason is that it was first seen near swamp ponds in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. During habituation, Mugurusi (which is means “Old man” in Rikiga), the dominant silverback then was the dominant silverback amidst his old age. During the habituation process, Mugurusi was commanding a big group of over 30 members which is quite big compared to other families, those habituated and not. Mugurusi’s age was worn out so he passed away. At the time of Mugurusi’s death, the family had four silverbacks waiting in the cue of who would succeed their father. This caused succession disputes as the siblings were fighting for leadership of the family. These silverbacks were Rwansigazi which means “The youthful boy”, Mwirima which means “darkness” and then Makara “Charcoal”.

Rwansigazi being bigger was supposed to succeed Mukurisi but at the time of his death, Mwirima had equally grown stronger and thus wanted to challenge for family leadership. There was no agreement among the two for several years so Rwansigazi and Mwirima shared power after their fathers’ death. The family remained as a unit under the leadership of these two brothers, the time came when incompatible differences among the two brothers were soon or later to cause separation of this once big family. Rwanzigazi was adventurous and liked travelling for long-distance while Mwirima who like his dad Mugurisi preferred a small range. Prominent members of Habinyanja family are, Makara, Rwansigazi, Maraya, Kisho, Nabukye, Binyonko, Rugyendi, Nyamuhango, Elsa, Hamusini, Hakato, Gacyaro and Bangenyi.

Rushegura gorilla family was habituated in 2000 and opened to clients for gorilla tracking in 2002. It was being led by Mwirima. He parted ways with his brother, Rwansigazi who was famous for taking the gorillas on distant ranging expeditions, while Mwirima preferred shorter ranges. Because of this, the family broke away from the Habinyanja gorilla family after the death of their father, a silverback called Mugurusi. The Rushegura family, led by the late Mwirima, a strong-massive silverback, formed his own family. He carried away with him seven gorillas who became family but he later passed on and a strong black back called Mwirima; a son to the late Mukurusi took over. The Late Mwirima had a determination to find a large stable family that he worked to achieve it and by April 2010, the individuals had increased to 19 from the original 8. He is on record to have sired a number of offsprings so far. With the death of Mwirima in 2014, an influential black back Kabukojo has taken over control of the family.

Katwe gorilla group is the newest gorilla family in Buhoma region of Bwindi impenetrable National park. three years to habituate and complete Katwe gorilla family located in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. I have ultimately witnessed several tourists coming in Uganda for their Uganda safaris/Uganda tours in the different Uganda safari/ Uganda tour destinations. Christened the Pearl of Africa, a lot is expected by tourists during their Africa safari visit.

As an Africa tour operator company, we have had interactions with our Uganda safari tour clients, our Rwanda safari travelers, Congo safari tourists, Tanzania tour clients and Kenya safaris tour travelers about their Africa safari tour adventures. I just realized there is a lot of myth told to them. Myths around adventure travel are rampant these days, but also the profound experience that comes from it isn’t talked about as much as it should be either.

In this article, we are going to look at adventure travel so you relate it to your safari countries or destinations whether you getting involved in activities like gorilla trek safaris Uganda, Rwanda wildlife tours, Congo gorilla trekking safaris, Uganda bird watching safaris, Kenya wildlife safaris, Tanzania wildlife safaris depending on what you’re interested in.

All you need to know is that adventure travel is influential and transformative. In this era, travel focuses more on epic photos. However, they have neglected stories behind them that experience is often left by the wayside. Once you decide to go for a Tanzania safari to Serengeti National Park, take an epic photo that describes your fantastic spot, pose with the best emotion of your heart at that moment. This will surely be a lasting memory.

Once you take a gorilla safari tour in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo, it is an activity that soaks you purely into nature, challenge yourself physically or mentally, or mix with people for a breathtaking a cultural safari in Uganda or Rwanda so return home a little changed from your travel adventure. All the mighty and beautiful things that will come from this experience are one of the things no one tells you about adventure travel.

Adventure is good for your health

If you have been travelling to different destinations, I’m sure you’ve experienced how adventure travel can make you feel even more alive. To me its therapy! There is a way people get excited when they see mountain gorillas up close in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park during their Uganda gorilla trekking safaris, Rwanda gorilla tours and Congo gorilla safaris. The joy you get may help you live longer.

Activities such as visiting a wilderness area like Kidepo Valley National Park or spending time in a rainforest-like the Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforest, or any forest-like Mabira, can boost our immune systems, which is definitely a good thing, right? Specialists also state that active adventures help reduce our stress levels and even help us sleep better. This is already Good news for those who struggle for a healthy living.

I can personally confirm the amazing benefits of going on an adventure, especially getting back out into nature. The harder, the better. The more I challenge you to challenge yourself, the higher the personal victory and feeling of success when you’re done. It’s an amazing feeling.

It gives you the chance to grow

Today’s travelers focus more on personal growth than risk-taking. In the past, adventure travelers were more motivated by risk-taking, but today many tend to look at it more as a chance for personal growth. One of the things give you a chance to grow, is being in a variety of different environments.

This is so because, during a Uganda safari tour, you will learn amazing skills on the road including solving a problem-solving for example a breakdown of your 4×4 safari car hire in Uganda, survival skills, adapting to travel in different countries and cultures, and learning other languages.

When you happen to visit a developing country like Uganda, you will learn to appreciate what you have back home. While here for your safari Uganda, you ought to learn how to put things into rather a harsh perspective.

Trust me I have seen people return from trips in Uganda a little different to how they started. During interaction with them after their tour in Uganda, they normally have a fresh perspective on life and new skills that get transferred into their personal and working lives giving them a sense of accomplishment.

Adventure travel is good for the brain

To be true, adventure travel is often physically active. Therefore it has a positive effect on your mind. Are you that person that wants to improve your memory? According to the US researchers, you need to book a physically active safari in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania or Kenya like a Uganda Rwanda cycling safaris and Uganda hiking safaris. An active Africa vacation safari involving new challenges is the most beneficial since it even helps you to build connections between brain cells. I assure you getting outdoors and being active can change your life, Rwanda gorilla trekking safaris and Uganda gorilla trek safaris change people’s lives.

Adventure trips help you expand the time

If you feel grounded at office, school or home, take an Africa adventure safari or a safari to any other destination of your choice. Research by Stanford University has found that people who experience wonder safaris tend to be more satisfied with life and prefer experiences over physical products. It seems that feeling awe brings us into the present moment, and that makes us feel like we have more time available. So, having adventures seems to be a way to break up the normal flow and expand our perception of time.

It allows you to give back

If you are that person that wants to spend your money well, adventure travel opens up so many opportunities to give back in the countries we visit. When you travel with a responsible tour operator, your money will help local economies. Operators who are committed to responsible tourism, such as Prime Safaris & Tours Ltd, operate trips so they help orphaned kids at Christ Our Vision Orphanage as well as improve their education and health.

With all this, it’s time to share these untold travel adventurous experiences!

The post Things You Will Never Be Told About Adventure Travel Experience appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

Things That Make Bwindi A Destination Beyond Mountain Gorillas

Samuel Makanga

Travel blog

Things That Make Bwindi A Destination Beyond Mountain Gorillas Prominent as Africa’s...

The post Things That Make Bwindi A Destination Beyond Mountain Gorillas appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.

Things That Make Bwindi A Destination Beyond Mountain Gorillas

Prominent as Africa’s oldest rainforest, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda is characterized by rising ridges and valleys that act as home to the famous mountain gorillas that everyone overseas yearns to see. Launched in September 2017, World Gorilla Day is a day that was set to celebrate one of our closest relatives, the gorilla! The World Gorilla Day is an awareness day or a day to take action geared toward celebrating gorillas as well as empowering global communities to take action for all four gorilla subspecies mountain gorilla, Cross River gorilla, western lowland gorilla and Grauer’s gorilla) and their conservation.

The World Gorilla Day is annually on September 24th, the same day that Dian Fossey established Karisoke Research Center in 1967. Due to intensive protection, mountain gorillas that habit in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga National Park have improved from critically endangered to endangered, one step further from extinction though still a small population of about 1,000 individuals. All other subspecies of gorillas are still critically endangered and facing serious declines including the lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park Congo.

Gorilla trek safaris Uganda/ gorilla trekking Uganda, gorilla safaris Congo/ Congo gorilla safaris, & gorilla tours Rwanda/ gorilla trekking Rwanda tours are one of the most sought activities done by travellers on Africa safaris or interested in Africa wildlife safaris.

About Karisoke Research Center

2017 was the inaugural year for World Gorilla Day and it also marked the 50th anniversary of Karisoke Research Center, operated by The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI). Established by Dian Fossey, Karisoke is the longest running gorilla field study site dedicated to the conservation, protection, and study of gorillas and their habitats in Africa. However, there are many great organizations and individuals dedicated to fighting for their survival, but greater awareness and investment are essential to gaining ground for gorillas.

Did you know World Gorilla Day is also naming day for the baby gorillas?

World Gorilla Day is an extra-special celebration this year. The name of Lulu’s male infant, who has his 2-month birthday on World Gorilla Day, will be revealed with the gorillas.

How do you get involved in the world gorilla day celebrations?

The quickest way of participating in the World Gorilla Day is by posting a gorilla video or gorilla photographs on this day.

Another best way to do this is by educating your friends, family, and coworkers about gorilla conservation. You can do this by talking to them, sharing our posts on social media or you can even directly support us by buying gorilla printed T-shirts, trekking gorillas and many more.

Activities you can do for World Gorilla Day

Interested in participating in World Gorilla Day from home, you and your family can try a fun and educational World Gorilla Day activity like a Uganda gorilla tour/ Rwanda gorilla tour/ Congo gorilla tour around the house or engage the classroom kids!

Another activity would be ‘Groom like a Gorilla’! For those that have encountered gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda, gorilla trek safaris Rwanda or Congo gorilla trekking tours have at least seen Gorilla moms spend time grooming their infants as a form of bonding, and also to improve health. To groom like a gorilla, all you need is a gorilla stuffed animal and some small clips. Attach the clips to the hair of the gorilla and let someone else “groom” the gorilla to get them off!

The best fun activity would be to forage like a Gorilla. This game is fun. Gorillas spend a large portion of their day foraging for food, which means they have to search for their food! To forage like a gorilla, get a large basket and hide a few colored balls or blocks to represent food or grass, shredded paper, and probably leaves! You can even have someone go through the material to find all of the hidden ‘food’ items!

New campaigns on board; 2020 global mobile recycling challenge! “Gorillas on the Line…Answer the Call.”!

Recycle your old cellphone and other electronics

Recycling your old cellphone and other electronics is one simple contribution you can make to help the wild gorilla population. As we celebrate this World Gorilla Day 2019, invite friends and family to answer the call for gorillas and participate in the 2020 mobile phone recycling challenge. “Gorillas on the Line…Answer the Call” came to a close on April 30, 2019. Twenty-two zoo and aquarium partners collectively hosted the challenge, recruiting schools and organizations within their local region to join the campaign. In total, the message reached more than 260,000 people, 56 groups across the country participated and collected 12,486 old mobile phones, and raised $6,055 to save gorillas in the wild! The 2019 challenge far surpassed the goals of engaging 10,000 people in collecting 10,000 cell phones. This community engagement initiative was created by the Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) Gorilla Species Survival Plan education advisory team to raise awareness about cell phone recycling and its benefits to gorilla conservation. The challenge, which kicked off in February took place over the span of three months and involved students, teachers, parents, zoo staff, and many others in collecting old handheld electronics to be recycled in the name of gorilla conservation.

Coltan, a type of mineral used in electronics like cellphones and laptops, is found in and mined out of wild gorilla habitats. However, the process of mining coltan involves not only destruction of gorilla habitats to unearth the minerals, but the presence of numerous people in the forests to operate the mining sites. To feed these people, wildlife is hunted from the surrounding forests. This can include gorillas, chimpanzees, elephants, and many other species. Without these animals, there will be no interesting Africa wildlife safaris particularly Uganda wildlife safaris, Rwanda wildlife safaris, Congo wildlife safaris and many more.

Due to this, we ask you to simply recycle your old electronics instead of throwing them away. When we recycle electronics, we can reuse the coltan, which ultimately decreases the need for mining in gorilla habitats! Mountain Gorillas are a popular ape for Rwanda safaris only trekked for sighting. Gorillas have both the females and males and with a study by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund scientists, female gorillas are proved to be important in the success of the males. Gorillas usually move or transfer from one gorilla group to another several times during their life span.

An incident seen in all of the gorilla species. In mountain gorillas, the females emigrate from their natal group once they reach the age of sexual maturity. With the increase in the mountain gorilla population over the years due to their daily protection, this has resulted in more groups, which has likely facilitated the increased numbers of transfers. Almost without exception, the females transfer during inter group interactions -in other words, when two family groups come together.

Movement of female Gorillas among groups

Yes, female gorillas are known to transfer from one gorilla family to another but then what are the reasons for this movements;

The one major reason for female movement is certainly the avoidance of breeding with males of her own family (in breeding). For instances where females transfer from a non-natal group where they don’t have male relatives it is believed that the reasons are more related to the quality of the dominant male (silverback gorilla).

Another cause of transfer can be a loss of an offspring by the female gorilla. They move to perhaps seek a stronger male who can protect her off spring better. Planning for a transfer doesn’t just start overnight.

A female gorilla can take several attempts as they check each group just to find the right family or silverback. As females move from different groups to seek powerful males to ensure their protection and the safety of their future infants, the success of the males is also dependent on the number of females – and therefore offspring – he has.

Therefore, the female choice in which group to settle in undoubtedly plays a key role in defining which males are most successful within the habitat! The female transfer is also key in the formation and transformation of a particular group.

The silverback gorillas may lead the group and protect the family but then the females are critical in ensuring the success of the family made by the choice on which silverback is suitable for the lead role.

Gorillas are amazing apes and with the strong conservation measures, the numbers are increasing! The surest way of seeing the gorillas is by undertaking a Uganda gorilla trekking tour, gorilla trekking safari in Rwanda or a Congo gorilla trekking safari. To catch a glimpse on the way of life of the gorillas in Rwanda, plan to visit Volcanoes National Park since its the major attraction in Volcanoes National Park. Other wise, you can also visit Virunga National Park in Congo, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Tanzania safaris offer one of the best Africa wildlife safaris including Tanzania birding safaris. A Tanzania wildlife safari offers you the chance to visit Africas’ most famous Serengeti National Park while Kenya safaris offer Kenya birding safaris and Kenya wildlife safaris that bid you the chance to visit Masaai Mara National Park.

The post Why Female Gorillas Are Important in Gorilla Families appeared first on Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda.
